(7) Future directions for FSG Open Printing
- Discussion - Norm commented in email note after last FSG Architecture meeting - Till replied we should focus on getting APIs into Linux - Ira urged a broader POSIX target (including Windows) for APIs - Norm - PAPI/1.0 and PDAPI/0.2 are shipping in Open Solaris - Ira - JTAPI precursor is shipping in IBM OS/390 - Ira noted success story of FSG/OP Japan projects in LSB/3.2 - Device Discovery API - Ira planned to discuss next week at OSDL Desktop Architects - Norm suggested Ira consider coherence with HAL plug-and-play - Ira contrasted discovery of local devices and network devices - Norm has been looking at HAL, MDNS, and others on Open Solaris - Ira contrasted Zero Configuration (ad-hoc) and Managed Networks - two modes have opposite default strategies - could use a passive DHCP Listener to toggle between modes - Next Steps - ACTION - every SC member - suggested by Shida - Write up your FSG/OP mid-term vision/plan (2007 to 2009) - January SC meeting - review these plans and search for concensus

- Till - Ghostscript merging w/ ESP Ghostscript - within next few months, they should merge - Till - CUPS/1.3 release - December 2006 CUPS/1.3 release has no beta yet
